Linz Pflasterspektakel in Linz

Linz Pflasterspektakel is a free street-performance festival held over three days each July, filling the main square and Landstrasse with buskers doing acrobatics, fire performance, clowning and improvised theatre. Performers work for hat money rather than festival fees, an arrangement that has shaped its scrappy, close-up character since 1987.

Siegbert Janko, Linz's cultural manager since 1985, is credited with founding the Pflasterspektakel after watching street performers work the Djemaa el-Fna marketplace in Marrakesh -- he wanted Linz's main square to carry some of that same open, unticketed energy.
