The story

Salzburg Festival in Salzburg

One of the world's most prestigious performing-arts festivals, staged in Salzburg each summer since 1920, combining opera, orchestral concerts and theatre, most famously an outdoor annual staging of the morality play Jedermann on the Cathedral Square that has continued every year since the festival's founding.

Salzburg's summer festival owes its signature production to a Berlin premiere: Hugo von Hofmannsthal's morality play Jedermann, first staged in the German capital in December 1911, became the work that director Max Reinhardt chose to open the new festival on Salzburg's Cathedral Square in 1920, with Alexander Moissi in the title role.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Jedermann has been staged outdoors on the Cathedral Square in every festival since 1920, using the square's baroque architecture as its set rather than a built backdrop — a continuously observed tradition rare among European arts festivals of this age

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival was co-founded by Hofmannsthal, Reinhardt and Richard Strauss, and single performances of its signature play have drawn crowds reported at around 35,000 in recent years

03

The city starts moving

Reinhardt led the festival until 1937, before emigrating to the United States, establishing an outdoor-theatre identity that has outlasted his own tenure by nearly a century
