The story

Calle Libre Festival in Vienna

Calle Libre is Vienna's international street art festival, bringing artists -- many from Latin America -- to paint large-scale murals live in public view over several days each spring. Guided urban art tours and workshops extend the program beyond the murals themselves, and the festival's past work remains visible across the city.

Jakob Kattner founded Calle Libre in 2014 after a study trip through Latin America, where he watched street art function as an accepted, even celebrated part of the urban landscape rather than something automatically treated as vandalism -- an idea he wanted to import into Vienna's relationship with graffiti and murals.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Murals are painted live and in public over multiple days, so visitors can watch specific walls progress from blank facade to finished piece rather than only seeing completed work

02

The mystery stays covered

Founder Jakob Kattner modeled the festival directly on street art's normalized public status in Latin America, a lineage still visible in the artist roster even as it has broadened to include Austrian and other international muralists

03

The city starts moving

Working with KOR, the city's public art in urban space initiative, the festival has left more than seventy walls painted across thirteen Viennese districts over the years, turning a decade of editions into a rotating, permanent open-air gallery that outlasts any single year's event
