Vienna Festival in Vienna
Vienna's major spring arts festival, launched in 1951 to reconnect Austria to international culture while the city was still under Allied occupation. Running five to six weeks each May and June, it spans theatre, opera, dance and installation work across multiple venues, historically drawing around 100,000 visitors, with recent editions introducing participatory public opening formats.
Vienna was still divided among four occupying Allied powers when the city launched this festival in 1951, an attempt to pull Austria back into international cultural life while its own capital remained under foreign military administration, building on an isolated precedent event from 1927.
