The story

Vienna Shorts in Vienna

Vienna Shorts is Austria's largest short film festival, screening international and Austrian short fiction, documentary, animation and music videos across historic cinemas and museum venues each spring. Grown from a 2004 merger of student film initiatives, it now qualifies entries for the Academy Awards and European Film Awards.

Vienna Shorts began in 2004 when several existing Viennese short-film initiatives -- student-run programs called HomeMovieCorner, Fenster zum Hof and My Perfect TV -- merged their efforts to organize a joint festival under the name VIS Vienna Independent Shorts, screening 125 short films across several of the city's arthouse cinemas in its first edition.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival qualifies winning entries for the Academy Awards, European Film Awards and Austrian Film Awards, a status achieved progressively between 2012 and 2018 that gives its jury decisions real career consequences for filmmakers rather than just festival bragging rights

02

The mystery stays covered

Screenings run across four distinct competition categories, including a dedicated Austrian music video award rare among short film festivals, and take place across a genuinely varied set of venues -- the historic Gartenbaukino and Metro Kinokulturhaus, the contemporary Blickle Kino inside the Belvedere 21 museum, and an open-air courtyard screening space inside the MuseumsQuartier
