The story

Basgal Kalaghayi Festival in Basgal

A craft festival built around kelaghayi, the UNESCO-listed silk headscarf made almost exclusively in Sheki and the village of Basgal. Expect direct sales and demonstrations from the artisan families who weave, dye and hand-block-print each scarf over a two-day production process, rather than a retail craft fair.

Kelaghayi silk headscarves have been made in only two Azerbaijani centres for generations, the city of Sheki and the village of Basgal in the Ismayilli district, and UNESCO added the craft, its production and the traditions of wearing it, to its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Kelaghayi production is a rare case of a UNESCO-recognized craft still made almost nowhere outside two villages, and Basgal specifically is known for producing the most valued designs among a small number of recognized traditional patterns

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival gives visitors the unusual chance to buy directly from the weaver-dyer-moulder-ornamental-master teams who made each piece, rather than through any retail layer, and to watch stages of a process that normally takes two days compressed into festival demonstrations

03

The city starts moving

This level of direct artisan access is uncommon even among Azerbaijan's other craft-focused festivals
