The story

Harbour Island Junkanoo in Harbour Island

Harbour Island runs its own Boxing Day and New Year's Day Junkanoo along Bay Street in Dunmore Town, smaller and more intimate than Nassau's parade, with costumed groups, goombay drums and cowbells moving through the dark streets while visitors are often pulled directly into the dancing.

Dunmore Town on Harbour Island holds its own Junkanoo on the same two mornings as the rest of the Bahamas - Boxing Day, December 26, and New Year's Day - but at a fraction of Nassau's scale, which is exactly what makes it distinct.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The scale is what makes Harbour Island's Junkanoo stand apart: with a short Bay Street route and a small resident population, there is no barricaded grandstand separating spectators from performers the way there is in Nassau, so visitors regularly end up dancing alongside costumed groups rather than only watching them pass

02

The mystery stays covered

Costumes follow the same demanding cardboard-and-crepe-paper construction Bahamians use island-wide, built over months from August onward, but the parade itself keeps a neighborhood character - performers greeting people they know by name as they move down the street - that the capital's much larger event has largely outgrown
