Gergaoon on the Pearling Path

Gergaoon is not a manufactured festival but a public staging of an old Gulf children's custom: dressing up and going door to door for sweets on the fifteenth night of Sha'ban, held here among the restored merchant houses of Bahrain's Pearling Path in Muharraq. Because the date follows the Islamic lunar calendar, it shifts year to year. Expect a family crowd, traditional dress, communal songs and a slow, neighborhood-scale pace through a UNESCO heritage setting.

Gergaoon takes its name from a children's tradition older than any festival calendar: on the fifteenth night of the Islamic month of Sha'ban, two weeks before Ramadan begins, Gulf children have long dressed in traditional clothing and gone door to door singing simple call-and-response songs in exchange for sweets and nuts, a practice found across Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province under names like Garangao or Guriegiaan.
