Baishakhi Mela Dhaka in Dhaka
Running about ten days on the Bangla Academy grounds, Dhaka's Baishakhi Mela is the city's main new-year market fair, distinct from the Mangal Shobhajatra procession held the same week: roughly 160 curated stalls sell jamdani weaving, nakshi kantha embroidery, leather goods and shataranji rugs alongside toys, sweets, puppet shows and bioscope stalls. A second, looser version runs at Ramna Batamul in Ramna Park.
Since 1978, the Bangla Academy grounds in Dhaka have hosted a joint fair run by the academy and the government's Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), a stretch of stalls that runs for roughly ten days around the Bengali new year and has nothing to do with the Mangal Shobhajatra procession that passes nearby on the morning of Pahela Boishakh itself.
