The story

Dhaka Art Summit in Dhaka

The Dhaka Art Summit is a free, non-selling contemporary art event held every two years at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, pairing Bangladeshi artists with international curators and institutions across exhibitions, talks and performances. It functions more like a major regional biennial than a commercial art fair, best explored over multiple visits rather than a single afternoon.

Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani started this summit in 2012 with a deliberately non-commercial premise: nothing on the walls is for sale, and admission has stayed free, which sets it apart from the art-fair model most cities use to draw an international art crowd.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike most large art events, nothing here is for sale

02

The mystery stays covered

the summit was built from the outset as a non-commercial, curatorial platform rather than an art fair, and it remains free to attend

03

The city starts moving

It was founded specifically to give Bangladeshi and South Asian artists a recurring international stage inside the country, rather than requiring them to be discovered abroad, and has grown into one of the region's largest such platforms as a result, spanning galleries, courtyards and open spaces across an entire cultural campus
