Ras Mela Kuakata in Kuakata

Hindu pilgrims travel to the Bangladesh beach town of Kuakata to bathe in the Bay of Bengal during the Ras Purnima full moon, in a town also shaped by 18th-century Rakhine Buddhist refugee settlement. The 18-kilometer beach offers rare views of both sunrise and sunset, with a separate Buddhist Maghi Purnima gathering later in the calendar.

Kuakata's Ras Mela shares its ritual, a Hindu holy bath in the sea at the Ras Purnima full moon, with a beach town otherwise known for a very different origin story: the name Kuakata comes from a well ('kua') dug by Rakhine Buddhist refugees who arrived on this coast from Arakan, in present-day Myanmar, in the late 18th century after being driven out by Burmese forces.
