The story

Lalon Mela Kushtia in Kushtia/Chheuria

Twice yearly, Baul mystic Lalon Shah's grave at Cheuria near Kushtia draws devotees for three days of live Lalon-geeti singing, from the Dol Purnima gathering in Falgun to the Kartik death-anniversary mela in October. Crowds mix Muslim fakirs and Hindu Bauls in an open akhra rather than a formal venue, with ektara-driven songs replacing any staged program.

Fakir Lalon Shah is buried in a small village called Cheuria outside Kushtia, and twice a year the ground around his grave fills with Baul singers who treat mourning as an occasion for music rather than silence.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is one of the only Bangladeshi religious gatherings held twice on the calendar for two different reasons at the same shrine: a spring sadhu-sanga that Lalon devised himself, and an autumn death-anniversary mela

02

The mystery stays covered

The music is not a supporting feature but the entire event, centered on the ektara, a single-stringed drone instrument tied specifically to Baul performance

03

The city starts moving

Attendance can reach roughly half a million at the larger edition, turning a rural akhra roughly two kilometres from Kushtia's rail station into one of the densest overnight singing crowds in the country

04

The water draws everyone in

This is the original Cheuria mela, distinct from the newer government-run nationwide Lalon program that now overlaps with it on the October date
