The story

AnimeKon Barbados in Bridgetown

Founded in 2010, AnimeKon is the Eastern Caribbean's largest pop culture convention, held each August at Bridgetown's Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. Expect cosplay competitions, artist alley tables, gaming tournaments and panels covering anime, comics and fandom broadly, with a guest roster that has included internationally recognized cosplayers, all inside an air-conditioned indoor venue.

Omar Kennedy and Melissa Young founded AnimeKon in 2010 with a specific goal: bring the North American comic-con format to the Caribbean while giving local costume makers, artists and gaming developers a stage of their own, and the convention has run at Bridgetown's Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre ever since.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

AnimeKon has pulled internationally known cosplay guests such as Yaya Han and Knightmage to a convention center in Bridgetown, a level of guest recognition unusual for an island-based con of its size

02

The mystery stays covered

Founders Omar Kennedy and Melissa Young built it specifically to give local costume designers, artists and game developers a stage they otherwise would not have, so the artist alley and cosplay competitions carry a distinctly Caribbean flavor rather than replicating a generic template

03

The city starts moving

Running continuously since 2010, it has become the region's benchmark pop-culture event rather than a one-off novelty, with a track record spanning well over a decade
