The story

Bim Literary Festival and Book Fair in Bridgetown

Barbados' Bim Literary Festival and Book Fair grew out of BIM magazine, a Caribbean literary journal running since 1942, and has drawn Nobel and Giller Prize-winning writers to Bridgetown since its 2012 launch. Expect readings, panel talks and book tables spread across several venues, aimed at readers with a specific interest in Caribbean writing rather than a general festival crowd.

BIM magazine began in December 1942 as an offshoot of a Bridgetown social club's newsletter, and seventy years later its editor helped turn that literary lineage into a live festival, launching the Bim Literary Festival and Book Fair in May 2012.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few book festivals anywhere can trace a direct editorial link back to a magazine publishing regional writers since 1942, but Bim Literary Festival and Book Fair does exactly that through founder and director Esther Phillips, who also edits BIM magazine

02

The mystery stays covered

The inaugural 2012 edition opened with Nobel laureate Derek Walcott and Alba Prize winner George Lamming on the same bill, setting an unusually high literary bar for a small-island festival

03

The city starts moving

Because BIM was one of only two founding Caribbean literary journals of the 1940s, the festival's programming leans toward serious regional writing rather than general-interest publishing, giving it a sharper identity than most book fairs
