Emancipation Day Walk Barbados in Bridgetown/parishes
Every 1 August, Barbados marks the abolition of slavery with a walk from Independence Square in Bridgetown to the Emancipation Statue and on to the Heritage Village at Bridgetown Market. Open to anyone who wants to join, it turns a solemn public holiday into a shared, site-specific procession rather than a fixed ceremony.
Barbados abolished slavery on 1 August 1834, and the anniversary is marked not with a moment of silence but with a walk: crowds set out from Independence Square in Bridgetown and proceed toward the Emancipation Statue, widely known as the Bussa Statue after the man who led an 1816 rebellion against slavery, before continuing to the Heritage Village at Bridgetown Market on the Spring Garden Highway.
