The story

Grand Kadooment in Bridgetown

Barbados's Crop Over-closing costumed road parade, held on the Kadooment Day public holiday in early August, where masquerade bands in themed costumes move from the National Stadium to the beachfront finish at Spring Garden behind music trucks. It is the most attended single event on the Barbados calendar and the daytime, costume-focused counterpart to the same week's pre-dawn Foreday Morning Jam.

Grand Kadooment traces its costumed procession to sugar-estate harvest celebrations from the 1780s, though the modern parade is a 1974 revival by the Barbados Tourist Board rather than an unbroken three-century tradition.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Costume bands rehearse and design their looks for months, so the parade functions as a slow-moving visual comparison between competing bands' colour schemes and choreography rather than a single spectacle - a very different logic from the deliberate mess of Foreday Morning Jam earlier the same week

02

The mystery stays covered

It closes an entire festival season rather than standing alone, following months of Crop Over programming and directly capping the Pic-O-De-Crop Finals and Foreday Morning Jam

03

The city starts moving

The day ends with a beachfront fireworks display at Spring Garden, giving the parade a defined climax rather than simply dispersing
