National Independence Festival of Creative Arts in Bridgetown/parishes

A month-long, multi-discipline competitive arts festival held across Bridgetown and the parishes each November, judging entries in dance, drama, music, literary and visual arts, culinary arts and film for gold, silver and bronze awards. Run by the National Cultural Foundation and timed to Barbados's Independence Day, it shows homegrown creative work judged by Barbadians rather than a curated tourist programme.

The National Independence Festival of Creative Arts traces its origin to 1973, when writer Jeanette Layne-Clarke and her husband Arden Clarke persuaded newly independent Barbados to build a homegrown competitive arts festival rather than rely on imported cultural programming.
