The story

National Independence Day Parade Barbados in Garrison Savannah/Bridgetown

Every 30 November, uniformed military, police and youth units march from Kensington Oval through central Bridgetown to National Heroes Square, marking Barbados's 1966 independence. It is the country's largest fixed civic spectacle: a 21-gun salute, massed bands and folk marching troupes, free to watch from the pavement along the route.

Barbados's independence ceremony was first staged at the Garrison Savannah in 1966, and the parade descended from that ceremony is now the largest fixed public spectacle tied to a Barbadian national holiday.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The parade regularly includes the Barbados Landship, a home-grown tradition in which members drill and dance in mock-naval uniforms, complete with ranks like admiral and boatswain, a custom found nowhere outside Barbados

02

The mystery stays covered

The exact starting venue alternates between Kensington Oval, a working international cricket ground, and the Garrison Savannah, a former British garrison and racetrack, so the parade doubles as a walk through two of the island's most historically loaded sites depending on the year
