Rite of the Kalyady Tsars in Semezhava

Semezhava village sees its quietest houses opened to costumed visitors each January when a group of local men perform the Rite of the Kalyady Tsars. Inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2009, the rite sends a troupe of characters, led by Tsar Maximilian, door to door through the village to perform short comic scenes and collect treats, a custom locals trace back to the eighteenth century.
