Vitebsk City Day Festival in Vitebsk
Vitebsk celebrates its City Day each June, built on a founding legend crediting Kyivan princess Olga with an impossible 974 date and a firmer chronicle reference from 1021 that predates Minsk's own first mention. The modern celebration traces to a 1974 Soviet millennium honor, and expect concerts, historic exhibitions and craft markets along the Western Dvina rather than the city's larger, separate July arts festival.
Vitebsk's official age rests on a founding legend that does not quite survive contact with the calendar: city tradition credits Kyivan princess Olga with founding Vitebsk in 974, but historians have long pointed out that Olga died in 969, five years before her supposed founding date.
