The story

Anima Festival Brussels in Brussels

Belgium's only animation-specific film festival, running since the early 1980s under earlier names before becoming Anima. It holds both Oscar-qualifying and BAFTA-qualifying status for its national and international short-film competitions, and pairs public screenings with Futuranima, an industry program of talks aimed at animation professionals rather than general audiences.

Anima traces its roots to 1982, when a small animation showcase called Rencontres du cinema d'animation screened in Brussels; by 1984 it had become the Semaine du dessin anime and welcomed guests including Tim Burton and John Lasseter before either was a household name.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Anima is the sole animation-only festival in Belgium, giving it a specialization no other Belgian film event shares, and it carries both Oscar-qualifying and BAFTA-qualifying status for its competition winners - a combination held by very few festivals its size

02

The mystery stays covered

Its Futuranima strand runs professional talks and industry meetings alongside the public program, so the week includes a working-industry layer, not just screenings

03

The city starts moving

The range within the medium is wide: stop-motion, hand-drawn and CGI work all screen across the same week rather than being siloed by technique
