The story

Ommegang Brussels in Brussels

Ommegang Brussels is an annual historical pageant that reenacts the 1549 ceremonial entry of Emperor Charles V into the city, with roughly 1,400 costumed participants, horses and period guild societies parading in Renaissance dress. Recognized by UNESCO since 2019, it culminates in a ticketed formal tableau on the Grand-Place rather than a free-flowing street party.

Roughly 1,400 costumed extras — horse riders, crossbowmen, archers, fencers and arquebusiers — restage a single afternoon from 1549: the ceremonial entry of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and his son Philip II into Brussels.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The performers are not hired extras in generic costume: many of the crossbow, archery and fencing guilds taking part are the actual historic civic guild societies whose predecessors marched in the original 16th-century processions, giving the reenactment a continuity that is hard to fake

02

The mystery stays covered

The Grand-Place finale is staged as formal, ticketed theater with seating stands, distinguishing it from an open street parade — visitors who want the full tableau need to plan for that in advance rather than showing up

03

The city starts moving

UNESCO's 2019 Intangible Cultural Heritage listing has also pushed the event toward tighter historical accuracy in costume and choreography rather than pageant spectacle for its own sake
