Zinneke Parade in Brussels
Zinneke Parade is Brussels' biennial, non-competitive street parade built entirely by volunteer community groups called zinnodes, with no motorized floats and no recorded sound — every costume and note is handmade and live. It draws visitors interested in grassroots, DIY community art rather than polished spectacle, moving through the city center on a single afternoon.
Twenty or so 'zinnodes' — self-organized groups of fifty to a hundred residents recruited from across Brussels' neighborhoods — spend months building costumes, choreography and live music before walking the results through the city center in a single afternoon.
