San Pedro Carnaval in San Pedro

San Pedro Carnaval fills Ambergris Caye's sand streets with three days of powder, paint and charcoal before Lent begins, a Mestizo tradition dating to the 1870s. Comparsas of costumed dancers move through town, men perform exaggerated dances in drag for coins, and the mock legend of Juan Carnaval closes with his will read aloud and his effigy burned on Ash Wednesday.

San Pedro Carnaval traces back to the 1870s, when Mestizo families who had fled the Caste War in the Yucatan settled on Ambergris Caye and brought a pre-Lenten tradition of powder, paint and mischief with them.
