Sarteneja Easter Regatta in Sarteneja

Sarteneja's Easter Regatta puts the village's own hand-built fishing sailboats on display, racing along the Corozal District shoreline in a tradition that has run since 1950. It gives fishermen's families a rare chance to watch the men sail for pleasure rather than work, in a fleet built by local shipwrights who supply much of Belize's traditional sailing fleet.

Sarteneja sits at the tip of a mangrove peninsula in Corozal District, built by Yucatec refugees in the 1850s into what is now Belize's largest fishing village, and its Easter Regatta has raced that identity in wood and canvas since 1950.
