The story

Royal Highland Festival in Laya

The Royal Highland Festival, launched in 2021 in the high-altitude village of Laya, gathers yak herders and highland communities from across northern Bhutan for two days of yak displays, archery, mastiff dog shows, and traditional highland song and dance. It is a secular, government-organized celebration of pastoral highland culture rather than a religious tshechu, held in one of Bhutan's highest permanently inhabited settlements.

The Royal Highland Festival began in 2021 as a government-organized gathering in Laya, a settlement above 3,800 meters that is one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Bhutan, created specifically to bring visibility and economic support to the country's scattered highland communities.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is one of Bhutan's newest major festivals, created in 2021 specifically to spotlight highland communities that rarely feature in the country's tourism narrative, and it is staged at genuine high altitude in Laya rather than a valley dzong

02

The mystery stays covered

The program celebrates a working pastoral economy, yak herding, caterpillar fungus harvesting, and semi-nomadic seasonal movement, through competitions and displays rather than religious cham dance, drawing delegations from roughly a dozen highland gewogs who rarely gather together otherwise

03

The city starts moving

It doubles as a platform for policy conversations about the challenges facing remote, high-altitude communities
