The story

Lhuentse Tshechu in Lhuentse

Lhuentse Dzong perches above the Kuri Chhu gorge in the remote Kurtoe region of northeastern Bhutan, ancestral home of the Wangchuck dynasty and birthplace in 1825 of Jigme Namgyal, father of Bhutan's first king. Its three-day December Tshechu, said to have been instituted roughly three centuries ago by Yongzin Ngagay Wangchuk, fills the dzong courtyard with masked cham and folk dances performed for a community far fewer travelers reach than Bhutan's western festivals.

Lhuentse sits at the far edge of Bhutan's usual travel routes, a long, winding drive into the Kurtoe region of the northeast, and that distance is part of what defines its Tshechu.
