Nabji Lhakhang Drup in Nabji Lhakhang

Nabji Lhakhang Drup marks the spot where, according to local legend, Guru Rinpoche mediated a peace pact between two warring 8th-century kings, sealed with handprints pressed into a stone pillar still kept inside the temple. Held each January by the lunar calendar in the remote Nabji-Korphu village cluster of central Bhutan, the festival's signature moments are a fire-blessing ceremony called Mewang and the Thercham, ritual dances performed to grant fertility and protection.

Deep in the Nabji-Korphu river valley of Trongsa district, reached on foot along a trail through Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park rather than by road, Nabji Lhakhang holds one of Bhutan's more specific founding legends.
