Thimphu Tshechu in Tashichho Dzong
Tashichho Dzong hosts Bhutan's largest and most attended tshechu, a three-day sequence of masked cham dances established in 1867 that draws bigger crowds than any other dzong festival in the country. Thimphu residents and visitors pack the courtyard to watch monks and lay dancers perform wrathful deities and comic atsara interludes, in a festival that follows shortly after the more austere Thimphu Drubchen at the same dzong.
Tashichho Dzong doubles as the seat of Bhutan's government and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo's monk body, and each autumn its inner courtyard becomes the stage for the country's most attended tshechu.
