Entrada Virgen del Carmen in El Alto
The Entrada de la Virgen del Carmen is El Alto's devotional procession honoring the Virgen del Carmen, following a route along Juan Pablo II, Alfonso Ugarte, Plaza Libertad and Avenida 16 de Julio to her church. More than 60 fraternities dance Morenada, evoking African-slave resistance, and Caporales, drawing on Afro-Bolivian roots, after an opening offering to the Pachamama with processions typically starting around 8am.
Each year, before the sun has fully cleared the horizon over El Alto, fraternities gather to begin the Entrada de la Virgen del Carmen with an offering to the Pachamama, a moment of Andean ritual that precedes the day's Catholic devotion rather than standing apart from it.
