The story

Fiesta del Gran Poder in La Paz

Gran Poder is La Paz's largest folkloric dance parade, built around devotion to the Cristo del Gran Poder and grown from a neighborhood procession into an entrada with well over a hundred costumed dance fraternities. Morenada, caporales, diablada and dozens of other dances fill the route for hours, backed by brass bands, in costumes that take a year of workshop labor to build.

Gran Poder began as a modest neighborhood procession in the Chijini area of La Paz in the early twentieth century, built around a devotional image of the Cristo del Gran Poder, and grew over the decades into one of the largest folkloric dance events in South America.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Scale and craftsmanship set Gran Poder apart: dozens of fraternities, each numbering in the hundreds of dancers, move through La Paz in costumes built over a full year, some so heavy and elaborate they rival professional stage costume

02

The mystery stays covered

The dance repertoire spans Bolivia's regions, from morenada and caporales in the highlands to tinkus and saya from valley and Afro-Bolivian traditions, giving the parade a broader cultural range than a single regional carnival

03

The city starts moving

Underneath the spectacle sits genuine devotion to the Cristo del Gran Poder image, with many dancers treating a year of participation as a personal religious promise rather than pure performance
