Urkupina draws its name from a Quechua phrase meaning roughly 'there on the hill,' tied to an origin story in which the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a young shepherdess named Valentina Orellana on a hillside above Quillacollo in the colonial period, leaving behind a rock formation still venerated as the site of the apparition.
