Carnaval Tarijeno

Carnaval Chapaco in Tarija opens with the caballada, a procession of Chapaco riders in ponchos, embroidered shirts and hats announcing carnival to the rhythm of the erque, caja and bombo, closing its first day with the Largada del Diablo. Later days bring children's and adult corso parades and martes de albahaca, when locals play with water and aromatic flowers; Tarija's carnival draws the second-most tourists nationally after Oruro's.

Each year, Tarija announces its carnival not with a parade on foot but on horseback, as the caballada sends riders dressed in ponchos, embroidered shirts and traditional hats through the streets, accompanied by the erque, caja and bombo, instruments closely associated with Chapaco musical identity.
