Bascarsija Nights in Sarajevo

Bascarsija Nights is Sarajevo's biggest annual cultural festival, running through July with free open-air programming in the old Bascarsija quarter alongside ticketed opera, ballet and concert programs at partner venues across the city. Traced to informal 1988-89 gatherings and formally relaunched in 1996 after the siege, it now draws roughly 150,000 visitors, making crowds in the old town's narrow lanes the main practical consideration.

Bascarsija Nights traces its roots to 1988 and 1989, when filmmaker and writer Sejfudin Tanovic organized informal cultural evenings in Sarajevo's old Ottoman quarter, only for the idea to be interrupted almost immediately by the war.
