The story

Sarajevo Film Festival in Sarajevo

Sarajevo Film Festival grew out of a 1995 festival staged during the siege of Sarajevo, and has become South-East Europe's most prominent film event, screening hundreds of films from dozens of countries each August. Its founding purpose - platforming regional cinema for international audiences - still defines the program today, alongside a well-known outdoor screening tradition around the city.

Sarajevo Film Festival began in October 1995, while the siege of Sarajevo was still technically ongoing, when Obala Art Centar staged a festival intended to help rebuild civil society and hold onto the city's cosmopolitan identity rather than wait for peace to program a cultural event.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals carry an origin story like this one: the first edition ran in 1995 while Sarajevo was still under siege, drawing roughly 15,000 attendees to 37 films when organizers expected almost no one

02

The mystery stays covered

That founding focus on regional access shaped a lasting specialty in South-East European cinema, and the festival's alumni track record includes Danis Tanovic's Oscar-winning No Man's Land

03

The city starts moving

Outdoor screenings under the summer sky at open-air venues add a format most festivals in colder or more built-up cities cannot offer
