Sarajevo Film Festival in Sarajevo
Sarajevo Film Festival grew out of a 1995 festival staged during the siege of Sarajevo, and has become South-East Europe's most prominent film event, screening hundreds of films from dozens of countries each August. Its founding purpose - platforming regional cinema for international audiences - still defines the program today, alongside a well-known outdoor screening tradition around the city.
Sarajevo Film Festival began in October 1995, while the siege of Sarajevo was still technically ongoing, when Obala Art Centar staged a festival intended to help rebuild civil society and hold onto the city's cosmopolitan identity rather than wait for peace to program a cultural event.
