Passion of Christ Nova Jerusalem in Brejo da Madre de Deus
Nova Jerusalem is a purpose-built open-air theater outside Brejo da Madre de Deus, Pernambuco, staging a large-scale Passion Play across dozens of walk-through sets during Holy Week. Opened in 1968 and regularly cited as one of the world's largest open-air theaters, it moves audiences between scenes on foot rather than seating them for a single fixed performance.
Nova Jerusalem opened in 1968 as a purpose-built open-air theater outside Brejo da Madre de Deus, in Pernambuco's dry interior, laid out across roughly nine hectares as a walk-through replica of ancient Jerusalem, complete with a temple square, Pilate's palace, Golgotha and dozens of smaller structures scaled for live performance.
