Navegantes Festival Porto Alegre in Porto Alegre
Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes is Porto Alegre's January 1-2 devotion to Our Lady of the Navigators, centered on a boat procession, the Romaria Nautica, that carries the saint's image out onto the Guaiba accompanied by a flotilla of small vessels. Rooted in Portuguese and Azorean maritime Catholicism, it ranks among the city's oldest continuously held popular traditions.
Porto Alegre opens its calendar year with the Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, a devotion to Our Lady of the Navigators that has anchored the city's waterfront community since at least the nineteenth century and remains one of its oldest continuously held popular traditions.
