Recife and Olinda share a Carnival calendar but keep separate identities: Recife opens with Galo da Madrugada, a Saturday bloco recognized as the world's largest Carnival parade by attendance, while hillside, colonial Olinda answers with narrow cobblestone streets, giant papier-mache bonecos and a slower pace.
