Rio Literary Festival of the Peripheries in Rio de Janeiro
FLUP takes Rio de Janeiro's literary festival circuit into the city's favelas rather than its postcards, staging readings, panels and poetry slams in neighborhoods such as Complexo da Mare and Cidade de Deus. Founded by journalist Julio Ludemir in 2012, it treats hip-hop and spoken word as literature in their own right, pairing published authors with community poets and giving peripheral, largely Black writers a stage built specifically for them.
FLUP carries Rio de Janeiro's literary conversation out of downtown salons and into the city's favelas, staging readings, debates and poetry slams in neighborhoods long left off the city's cultural map.
