Iemanja Festival Salvador in Salvador

Each February 2nd, Salvador's Rio Vermelho fishing quarter fills with flower-carrying devotees delivering offerings to Iemanja, the Candomble orixa of the sea, at the Casa do Peso before a flotilla of boats carries the gifts out to the ocean at dusk. Born among local fishermen in the 1920s after a failed fishing season, the festival now draws hundreds of thousands and functions as an unofficial start to Salvador's Carnival season.
