Lavagem de Itapua in Salvador
Lavagem de Itapua is a distinct neighborhood washing ceremony in Salvador's Itapua district, following the same baiana-led church-step washing, procession and street party format as the city's well-known Lavagem do Bonfim, but centered on Itapua's own church and community rather than the Bonfim basilica. Its scale is smaller and more local, and its timing sits later in the year, closer to December.
Salvador spreads its calendar of lavagem, or washing, ceremonies across the year and across neighborhoods, and Itapua, the old fishing village turned beachside district made famous in Vinicius de Moraes' song about its afternoons, holds its own distinct version centered on the neighborhood's church rather than the Basilica do Senhor do Bonfim across town.
