Festa da Penha in Vila Velha

Espirito Santo's largest religious gathering fills the week after Easter with pilgrims climbing to the Convento da Penha, a Capuchin monastery founded in 1558 above Vila Velha and Vitoria Bay. Dozens of romarias arrive on foot, masses run continuously inside the convent, and a blessing of vehicles and outdoor concerts by Brazilian gospel and sertanejo artists add a modern layer to one of the country's oldest Marian devotions.

Vila Velha's hillside sanctuary has been drawing pilgrims longer than almost any other Catholic celebration in Brazil, and the two weeks following Easter still bring tens of thousands of visitors climbing toward the Convento da Penha.
