Burgas and the Sea in Burgas
A national songwriting competition rather than a general festival, Burgas and the Sea traces to 1973 and settled into its current name in 1996. Finalist Bulgarian pop songs compete on a single evening at the open-air Summer Theatre in Burgas' seaside park, judged by a jury in front of a live audience, with winning songs regularly picked up by national radio.
The Burgas and the Sea song contest traces back to 1973, when the city's orchestra staged a competition called Songs for Burgas, the Sea and Its Working People at the seaside Summer Theatre; the event lapsed after thirteen editions and returned in 1996 under its current name, organized since by the vocal group Hot Sand.
