The story

Gabrovo Biennial of Humor and Satire in Gabrovo

The House of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo holds a permanent archive of more than 51,000 satirical artworks from over 170 countries, and every two years adds to it through the International Biennial of Humour and Satire in the Arts, a juried exhibition and competition running since 1973. Unlike the town's street carnival, this is a gallery event: cartoons, caricatures and satirical sculpture on formal display rather than costumes and parades.

Gabrovo's House of Humour and Satire holds a permanent collection of more than 51,000 satirical artworks by artists from over 170 countries, built up since the museum opened on 1 April 1972, and every two years the institution adds to that archive through the International Biennial of Humour and Satire in the Arts.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is one of the longest-running satirical art competitions in the world, tracing back to 1973 and drawing submissions from artists across more than 170 countries into a single permanent collection

02

The mystery stays covered

The museum itself occupies a converted former tannery, giving the galleries an industrial character distinct from a typical fine-art museum

03

The city starts moving

During a biennial edition, exhibition space expands well beyond the standing permanent collection to accommodate new juried submissions, and the event draws visiting artists and curators from abroad rather than only local audiences

04

The water draws everyone in

It is institutionally separate from the Gabrovo street carnival, though both trace their origins to the same early-1970s moment when Gabrovo formalized its national reputation for humor into cultural infrastructure
