Gabrovo's central boulevard closes to traffic for a Grand Parade of satirical floats and costumed performers each May, part of a self-mocking humor tradition the town has cultivated for generations as Bulgaria's self-declared capital of comedy. Organized by the municipality as the International Festival of Humour and Satire, the carnival mixes a scheduled procession with looser street performances and pranks across a longer week of programming.
