The story

Surva International Festival of Masquerade Games in Pernik

Bulgaria's largest gathering of kukeri mummers, held in Pernik each January since 1966 and recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2015. Thousands of costumed participants in wooden masks and bell-hung animal-hide costumes process through the town's streets over three days, continuing a winter ritual originally meant to drive off evil spirits before spring.

Choreographer Yordan Nikolov organized the first Surva gathering in Pernik in January 1966, turning a local mummer tradition into what became, by 1985, an internationally recognized festival and, in 2015, an entry on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Scale and recognition set Surva apart from Bulgaria's other mummer festivals: it draws well over ten thousand participants, some years above twelve thousand, and carries UNESCO intangible-heritage status granted in 2015, following international recognition first gained in 1985

02

The mystery stays covered

Troupes travel from as far as Japan and Peru to take part in the international program alongside Bulgarian regional groups, each wearing distinct mask and costume styles rooted in their home village or country

03

The city starts moving

The bells sewn into the costumes, sometimes weighing several kilograms per performer, produce a specific, deafening clang as groups pass, distinct from typical parade music
