The story

Night Plovdiv in Plovdiv

Despite its name, this is not a nightlife event: it is Plovdiv's Night of Museums and Galleries, a free, multi-venue cultural open house started in 2005 by the founders of SARIEV Gallery and run since 2007 by the Open Arts Foundation. Around 45 museums, galleries and cultural spaces extend their hours and drop admission fees for the event, drawing a combined audience estimated between 40,000 and 60,000 across the program.

Plovdiv's SARIEV Gallery founders, Vesselina and Katrin Sarievi, started something in 2005 that had no real precedent in Bulgaria: a single night when the city's museums and galleries would open free and stay open late, timed to look at art in a completely different social atmosphere without an entry fee to filter who showed up.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The organizing principle is simple but unusual for a citywide event: normal admission fees and closing hours are suspended across roughly 45 institutions simultaneously, letting one evening substitute for what would otherwise be days of separate museum visits with separate tickets

02

The mystery stays covered

It grew out of a single gallery's initiative in 2005 rather than a municipal program, and the Open Arts Foundation that now runs it was created specifically to keep the event going

03

The city starts moving

Its scale is unusual for what started as an informal one-night idea: combined attendance across the program is estimated at 40,000 to 60,000, enough to have measurably shifted annual visitor patterns at some of Plovdiv's smaller heritage museums
