The story

Rozhen National Folklore Fair in Rozhen Meadows

Rozhen's sabor, a traditional Bulgarian fair-and-festival hybrid combining folk competition with craft and food trade, began in 1898 as a rare sanctioned meeting point for villagers split by the old Bulgarian-Ottoman border running through Rozhen Peak. Held on open meadows south of Chepelare, it centers on Rhodopean song and gaida music rather than a national folklore sampler, closing each first evening with the Zvezden Rozhen night performance.

In 1972, the largest edition of the Rozhen fair drew 3,500 performers, including 300 gaida players, in front of an audience estimated at 150,000, figures that dwarf anything else staged on this mountain plateau in the Rhodopes.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rozhen is distinguished by its specifically regional focus: unlike national folklore showcases that sample traditions from across Bulgaria, its repertoire draws almost entirely from Rhodopean song, dance and gaida-playing traditions

02

The mystery stays covered

Its 1898 founding, tied to a border that once ran through Rozhen Peak itself, gives it a longer and more politically layered history than most Bulgarian folk gatherings

03

The city starts moving

The fixed program structure, opening with the song Bela sam bela yunache and closing the first night with the Zvezden Rozhen starry-sky performance, has stayed consistent across editions

04

The water draws everyone in

At its 1972 peak the fair drew roughly 150,000 spectators and 3,500 performers, a scale that remains a reference point for the event's historical significance
