Golden Kuker Sofia International Animation Film Festival in Sofia
Golden Kuker-Sofia is a spring animation festival launched in 2010, honoring Bulgarian animator Proyko Proykov and run by the Bulgarian Association of Independent Artists and Cartoon Animators. It screens hundreds of international submissions, including Academy Award-linked titles, alongside industry talks and student programming. Despite the shared name, it is a separate event from Varna's World Festival of Animated Film, whose historic Golden Kuker grand prize ran from 1979 to 1989.
Golden Kuker-Sofia takes its name from a trophy that belonged to someone else first: the original Golden Kuker was the grand prize of the World Festival of Animated Film in Varna, awarded across six editions between 1979 and that festival's last edition in 1989 before it went on hiatus.
