The story

Golden Kuker Sofia International Animation Film Festival in Sofia

Golden Kuker-Sofia is a spring animation festival launched in 2010, honoring Bulgarian animator Proyko Proykov and run by the Bulgarian Association of Independent Artists and Cartoon Animators. It screens hundreds of international submissions, including Academy Award-linked titles, alongside industry talks and student programming. Despite the shared name, it is a separate event from Varna's World Festival of Animated Film, whose historic Golden Kuker grand prize ran from 1979 to 1989.

Golden Kuker-Sofia takes its name from a trophy that belonged to someone else first: the original Golden Kuker was the grand prize of the World Festival of Animated Film in Varna, awarded across six editions between 1979 and that festival's last edition in 1989 before it went on hiatus.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival mixes public screenings with a working industry program, talks, workshops and a specific push to connect Bulgarian animators with visiting international peers and support younger and student filmmakers

02

The mystery stays covered

Submissions run into the hundreds from dozens of countries most years, occasionally including films with Academy Award nominations or wins elsewhere on the Class A festival circuit

03

The city starts moving

It is organized and juried by practicing animators through the Bulgarian Association of Independent Artists and Cartoon Animators rather than a general arts-festival board, giving the selection a craft-specific angle uncommon among broader film festivals
