The story

LUNAR Festival of Lights in Sofia

Since its 2022 launch by design studio MP-STUDIO, LUNAR has projected 3D-mapped light art onto Sofia's buildings, parks and squares over four free evenings each May, drawing crowds organizers put above 600,000. The lineup mixes Bulgarian and international light artists, and in a recent edition the format expanded to Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast.

LUNAR launched in Sofia in 2022, created by the design studio MP-STUDIO, and has since grown into what organizers describe as Bulgaria's largest single art event by attendance, with more than 600,000 visitors reported across the festival's evenings in recent years.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

LUNAR's core distinguishing feature is scale through projection: rather than building temporary structures, it uses 3D mapping to turn existing landmark buildings, parks and squares into changing visual installations for four nights only

02

The mystery stays covered

Organizers report more than 70 international artists and close to 200 commissioned works across the festival's run, an unusually large creative roster for a light-art event

03

The city starts moving

Free entry across every installation site, rather than a single ticketed venue, is central to its format, and its expansion to the southern Black Sea coast marks it as a growing rather than static event
